Synopsis

Entitled “Inner Landscapes”, this evening suggests an intimate quest, an exploration of emotions and movement in three pieces, two of which are new additions to the repertoire.

In Vers un pays sage (1995), choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot pays tribute to his father, the painter Jean Maillot. To the frenzied music of John Adams, the dancers engage in a dazzling marathon, a joyful explosion of colour.

Aszure Barton makes her Paris Opera debut with a black-and‑white piece, Busk (2009), whose title refers both to the English word for street performance and the Spanish buscar (to search). Using gypsy and choral music, the Canadian choreographer highlights the potential of the dancers’ bodies in an expressive and virtuoso language, sometimes close to mime.

Finally, William Forsythe’s sharp writing marries David Morrow’s music to offer the Rearray trio, a brilliant set of theme and variations pushing bodies to their limits.

Les Grands Entretiens - Vers un pays sage

By Isabelle Stibbe

When an artist meets the General Director of the Paris Opera or its Director of Dance, what do they talk about? For the second season of the series Les Grands Entretiens, the Paris Opera reveals the behind-the-scenes process behind the artistic programming of the new productions for the 2026/27 season. Choice of guest artists, key themes, staging intentions, or choreographic styles: these exclusive conversations, lasting between fifteen and thirty minutes, offer the first keys to understanding the works soon to appear on the bill.

The addition of Vers un pays sage to the repertoire provides an opportunity for choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot to discuss with José Martinez, Director of Dance at the Paris Opera, their influences, the neoclassical style, and the use of pointe work.

An invisible territory we each carry within us – a blend of memories, emotions and images – the inner landscape is a state of mind and soul. By giving form to this geography of the inner self, dance opens a window onto experiences of colour (Vers un Pays Sage), form (Rearray) and gestures glimpsed on a street corner (Busk).
